On the Waterfront (1954), directed by Elia Kazan and starring Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden, and Rod Steiger, won eight Academy Awards and is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. Shot mostly on location in the docklands of Hoboken, New Jersey, On the Waterfront tells the story of Terry Malloy, an ex–boxer turned dockworker who is a favorite of the corrupt union boss, Johnny Friendly. Malloy unwittingly gets involved in the gangland killing of the brother of Edie, played by Eva Marie Saint in her first film role. Terry falls in love with Edie and along the way, aided by a spirited and determined priest, he turns against his former pals, to the extent of testifying against them at their corruption trial. For his pains—and there are many—Terry earns redemption.
