RSO’s President’s Message

I love the word “new.” It brings with it so many images and feelings, and this season of your Richmond Symphony Orchestra certainly has a lot of new!

First, this is the inaugural season of our fourth Music Director, Maestro Andrés Lopera. Maestro Lopera brings more than 10 years of leadership experience with both professional orchestras and youth orchestras to his role here in Richmond, and we could not be more excited to see what he brings to the stage. His programs this season include 5 new works to the Civic Hall stage by composers Rossini, Weber, Zamora, Montgomery, and Strauss. Audiences will also be entertained by guest artists including Zaira Meneses, Zhu Wang, and Kathryn Henry.

Second, you may have noticed our new look. A new logo, font, and color scheme felt appropriate to mark this new chapter in our journey. This new branding will help us continue to grow into the future as a symphony that meets our mission of shaping the cultural life of our region by delivering exceptional, inclusive musical experiences that enrich, entertain, and educate.

Third, I am stepping into the role of the Board President. While it is an honor to lead an organization with a rich history like RSO, it is also a great responsibility. I understand how important it is for the board to steward this community treasure in the best way possible. The board and staff are grateful for the leadership of Jeff Carter, outgoing President, as he navigated through the Music Director search and hiring process with grace and compassion.

Although it may feel like everything is new this year, there are many things that remain consistent. One is the support of our sponsors, donors, and patrons like yourself. This organization exists to bring excellent music to the Civic Hall stage, but also to enrich the lives of the people of our community. We are incredibly grateful that each of you has continued to support this orchestra for nearly 70 years.

One additional consistent experience is our annual signature event, which will be held on April 27, 2024. This evening is always a fun, high-energy opportunity to support the orchestra while enjoying delicious food, drinks, and having a great time with friends. You won’t want to miss it!

Enjoy our 2023–24 season!

Leslie Bolser, President
