Monica Koechlein to depart after nearly 13 years of service; Board begins search for the organization’s next leader
The Richmond Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors today announced that Monica Koechlein will depart her role as Executive Director. Koechlein will remain with the organization through the launch of its 70th season to help ensure a smooth transition. Her final day with the RSO is scheduled for November 21.
For nearly 13 years, Koechlein has served the Richmond Symphony Orchestra with dedication, vision, and a deep commitment to its mission and community. During her tenure, she broadened the organization’s reach through concerts, community outreach, and educational programs while helping strengthen the foundation needed for long-term sustainability.
“We are deeply grateful for Monica’s service and the lasting impact of her many contributions,” Board President Marty Van Der Burgt said. “Her leadership has supported our musicians, staff, volunteers, patrons, and community and has helped position the symphony for continued success.”
The Board has begun preparing for the search for the RSO’s next leader and will approach the process thoughtfully and deliberately. The Board will seek a leader who can build on the organization’s strong foundation, work collaboratively with its artistic and operational teams, and guide the symphony into its next chapter.
Throughout the transition, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra remains in capable hands. Maestro Lopera, the RSO’s talented staff and orchestra members, dedicated volunteers, and engaged Board of Directors remain committed to advancing the organization’s mission and delivering meaningful musical experiences for the community.
The Board will share updates as the search progresses. The Richmond Symphony Orchestra looks forward to beginning the 2026–2027 season and continuing its work of bringing exceptional music and meaningful experiences to the community.
